We had compiled the research and drew out a plan, we had even gathered some collaborators for the project. However, to sustain the programme over the course of the year we realised that we needed funding.
After a rigorous application process and subsequent community vote, we received a community grant of £9,550 to start us off. Still, however, we needed more because we had an ambitious project in mind. We envisioned sponsoring writers, authors and wordsmiths to work directly with young people and needed support for this. As a testament to our project, Paper Nations and Bath Festivals decided to help out. They offered £10,000 more to the project which gave us the ability to really get out there, create more events and activities, as well as lend to the final WordUP festival to really celebrate the culmination of the project.
